The Director, Underwriting, will lead the underwriting initiatives to ensure that cases are appropriately assessed from a risk perspective and are appropriately priced for risk level. This individual will ensure that the business meets its strategic profit and growth objectives and is managed within the risk tolerance guidelines. This individual will be accountable for overseeing underwriting services for new business and/or existing accounts within the health plan space. They will participate in and lead initiatives with senior management in the development and implementation of underwriting policy, marketing and business strategy.

You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Lead our designated new Blues health plan reseller team for profitable new business and retain current clients for a major health plan
  • Lead and recommend strategic solutions to executive leadership
  • Lead the development of financial models to assist in the economic analysis of market alternatives
  • Leverage business knowledge to propose solutions to business challenges regularly in a dynamic work environment
  • Provide a knowledgeable leadership presence in sales and client interactions to drive positive economic outcomes for all parties
  • Evaluate and recommend alternative strategies based on economic analyses and trends to drive change
  • Collaborate with the Sales and Proposals teams to project pricing and profit for a range of services and products the company offers
  • Help train and mentor direct reports as well as the broader underwriting team
  • Travel up to 4-5 trips to client site per year (once per quarter on average)
  • This role will begin with 2 direct reports and more may be added after 12 months

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Math, Finance or related degree
  • 4+ years of experience with underwriting
  • 4+ years of financial modeling and analytics
  • 2 + years of experience interacting and presenting in a client or executive level setting
  • Intermediate level of proficiency with MSWord, Excel and PowerPoint
Preferred Qualifications
  • Tableau experience
  • Financial consulting experience
  • Sales and Account management experience
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Financial Forecasting

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The salary for this role will range from $112,700 to $193,200 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
